"the least mistrust" (TorStar 11/26) is not good enough
Dear Toronto Star Editor,
Your lead editorial and Ms Delacourt's article speak to the sad state of voter confidence in Parliament and the weary resignation that the public brings to this election.
Given that, "there is no certainty Parliament will look much different", may I suggest one change in House procedures that might make it "behave" differently, perhaps more co-operatively.
While many Canadians agree that "the Parties should get along" there is nothing that actually motivates them to do so.
If we raised the 'Bill-passing' bar within the Commons to 66.67%, the members would HAVE to get along .... or nothing would get done.
The higher percentage has great precedent in the 1791 Constitutional Act, in corporate governance and even within the US system when their House & Senate members agree to overrule a Presidential veto.
Your paper's national influence could give weight to this idea and an election about giving power TO the members - not just the Leader's insiders, would invigorate Christmas,the Holiday Season and Parliament.
